Turns out that Quickbooks won’t import data from Essentials either. I have not upgraded to Mac OS X yet, because I have to secure my financial records first. Like you, I need access to my financial history. I thought all database geeks believed that data must be preserved! Not Intuit, apparently. I feel like they are holding my data hostage.

We are currently putting the app through its paces on Lion to assess what needs to be addressed, and we’re also working with customers in the Intuit Community (user forum) to identify issues. We will share more about QuickBooks for Mac and Lion in the coming weeks, but in the interim, users should avoid running QuickBooks on Lion to ensure there is no disruption in working with their finances. Lastly, my aging Core2 MacBook Pro just doesn’t cut it anymore for running Parallels and Windows. So my remedy was to by a new PC laptop just for finances and run Quicken for Windows on it. But Internet message boards aren't always the best barometer of how the world at large will react. If Quicken Essentials for Mac appears in Apple retail stores and becomes a hot seller--which will probably happen if Patzer's suggestion that 80 percent of users will be satisfied by its feature set--then the company's decision to release a limited-functionality product this year will have been a smart one. If the company has miscalculated the desire for the features omitted from this version, Intuit will receive yet another black eye.

Quicken is the one application I've used on every computer I've owned: Quicken for DOS, Quicken for Windows 3.1, Quicken for Mac (System 7), Quicken for Windows (Win 98) and finally Quicken for Mac (OS 9 and OS X). As I moved from one OS & system to another I've always exported and imported my data files. The process is a bit convoluted but I've never lost anything. It's probably the only function I ever had to refer to the documentation on both versions to set up the export/import properly.

But this also marks the point for us to once again start tracking the release dates for our favorite software programs coming this Fall. That includes the expected Quicken 2017 versions of Basic, Deluxe, Premier, Mac, and Home & Business. Traditionally, for the two decades or more when Quicken was owned by Intuit, the release dates were so predictable that we were able to pinpoint the exact release day and time 6+ months in advance. But ever since the Quicken brand and product line was sold off last year and turned into a separate entity of it’s own, no longer part of the Intuit family (owned now by H.I.G. Capital), things are still a little bit unpredictable. But with that being said, we still give the likelihood of the 2017 product line to be released in late October (it used to be the third week of September). Quicken 2017 versions are expected to be released by the end of October, 2016.

Now here comes the $60, a new product marching proudly into the maw of a user base that's ready to tear the product, and Intuit, into tiny little pieces. What it's got, what it hasn't Quicken Essentials is a new app, re-written entirely using Apple's development environment, using native interface elements that make the app feel like a lost cousin of iWork. It's got access to 8,000 financial institutions--more than twice as many as the previous version--and Intuit says that number will jump to 16,000 'within the next few months.'
